Scientists have measured increases in melting Arctic ice in the Bering and Fram Straits, but the situation in the Davis Strait is not as clear. During a 2015 mission through the Davis Strait, we travelled through expansive ice fields. When I returned five years later, there was no sea ice to navigate and only a very few icebergs. An unusual year? Maybe. But I was reminded of a polar bear and her cub I had seen in 2018, swimming fifty kilometres off the coast of northern Labrador. The exhausted cub repeatedly climbed up on its mother’s back to take a break, her body sinking a little deeper. The cub would eventually slide off, swimming a bit farther before needing another rest. This pattern repeated until they disappeared from sight. I looked nervously around the ship on all sides, searching through my binoculars for ice, a chance for mother and cub to get a reprieve. There was none. In my correspondence with polar bear scientist Ian Stirling, I mentioned this incident and asked for his professional opinion on their likely fate. From what he could gather, there was hope for the mother to reach land, but he wasn’t optimistic about the young cub.
